Race Report, June 5
Last night, Team Weaver rolled west to North Dakota and the big Rivers City Speedway in Grandforks. It was our biggest venue so far in Skyler's career--and he made a clear statement that he can run with "the big boys."
Short version: he started third row outside in the second (of three) heats. From that position, he powered to a strong, third place the finish. The car ran great on the very sticky, very high-banked track, and we were excited for the feature.
In a race night of Street Stocks, Late Models and Sprints, the Midwest Mods were second on the race card. Positioned third row outside in the 22 car feature, Skyler did not make it through the ever-dangerous turn one. He was tapped sideways by Brett Schmidt, and spun out. On the restart tried to claim his original position. However the voice in his ear (the Raceiver official) sent him to the rear. Bad call, but nothing to be done.
Well, not really! It was from the 22nd slot that Skyler made his statement. In a race stopped four times from the caution flag, he found a very low line that worked. With good torque out of the corners, he began to pick off car after car. He moved up to 14th, then 11th, and toward the end of the race briefly to 8th, before finishing a crowd-pleasing 9th. Because of the multiple caution flags, the race was shortened by four laps. Shoulda, woulda, coulda (as we say in racing), but with another several laps, he might have finished close to the top five. And that's high praise for our driver.
More details and photos to come. Now, after 3 hours sleep, it's back to bed....
